Donna Rose is a fine art photographer living in the Southwest. She has been photographing the world around her for more than 25 years and started exhibiting her work in the 1990's. She is currently showing three portfolios on the website. Her Sanctuary portfolio is a collection of black and white photographs of churches and chapels located in Texas and New Mexico. Into Winter is a portfolio of color photographs of flowers and other natural items collected on summer walks. The White Sands Series are black and white photographs taken at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico.
Into Winter
This is a collection of photographs I made during one summer when I had free time to take long afternoon walks. On these walks, I collected flowers and other natural items. The photos are arrangements I made from the flowers, ice and other items that I collected. This collection is a celebration of the color and beauty of summer and my attempt to transform it; hold it over; and take it with me into winter. I continue to add to the collection each year.
Sanctuary
Sanctuary is defined as a place for worship; a place of refuge and protection; a place dedicated or set apart for the service or worship of God. This collection of black and white photographs includes catholic and protestant churches and chapels located from the border towns of the Texas Rio Grande to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. Many of these churches and chapels remain active and vibrant today, but others have been abandoned and are in various stages of decay reflecting the changes in rural populations. All have at one time served a vital role in the lives of the people and served as an anchor holding firm their communities. Here, in these simple structures, people have gathered together to celebrate their love and friendship, give thanks for blessings, dedicate new lives, and mourn their losses. Here, people have come together to gather their courage to persevere despite hardship.
Today, whether standing alone on the vast plains, nestled among the mountains of the high country, or rising from the bosque, these structures remain a testament to the religious heritage of the Southwest, where communities joined together in search of Sanctuary.
